Description
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of its most iconic fragrance, Guerlain introduces Shalimar L’Essence, a new interpretation of the legendary 1925 creation by Jacques Guerlain. With this latest release, the house pays tribute not only to a century of olfactory heritage but also to the women who have carried the scent across generations.
Originally inspired by the Mughal love story between Emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal—immortalized in the gardens of Shalimar and the Taj Mahal—the original Shalimar was a groundbreaking composition. Often considered the first “amber” fragrance in history, it was created by blending bergamot, iris, rose, jasmine, tonka bean, spices and woods and a then-new synthetic material: ethylvanillin. The result was a sensual, opulent perfume that helped define the modern oriental category.
For its centenary, Shalimar L’Essence offers a contemporary take on this legacy. Composed by Delphine Jelk, Director of Creation at Guerlain, the new Eau de Parfum centers once again on vanilla, reinterpreting it through both historical and modern lenses. Ethylvanillin is paired with vanilla tincture from Madagascar, enhancing its depth and richness. Floral heart notes of rose and iris soften the core, while modern musks lend a smooth, skin-like trail. The result is a warmer, woodier, and slightly leathery evolution of the original—a Shalimar for today.
